RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate (IWHC)

RYA Training Centre This course is run over either 1 or 2 days. It is recommended that if you have no experience of Rivers or Canals that you opt for the 2-day course. There is a lot of information to understand and the practical aspects of the course also need to be mastered in order to get the most benefit from your time and expenses. Two days gives you not only two days of instruction but we also like to think of it as a 2-day cruise as well.

The syllabus followed is in the RYA Inland Cruising Practical Course Notes, a copy of which is available on commencement of your course at the RYA recommended price.

Training

This RYA IWHC course includes, but is not limited to, the following elements:

Canal safety information
Manoeuvring the boat to come alongside and leave a jetty or canal mooring
Locks
Sound signals and navigation lights
General engine information and checks
Fire
Man overboard
Anchoring
Knots currents, tunnels and signs
Rules of the road and lots of essential safety advice
How a boat moves and steers forwards, astern and sometimes sidewards
Understanding and using winds and currents

RYA IWHC Course Summary

Basic charge for tution is £170 per day - (2 persons inclusive)
Additional persons cost £50 each
A small travelling charge may apply if the course is more than 20 miles from Nottingham, UK
The course can be run on your own craft and the above conditions still apply
Should you not have your own boat, we can arrange the hire of suitable craft for an additional £85 a day
