RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) - Inland

RYA Training Centre In order to obtain an International Certificate of Competence applicants must either have previously passed a practical certificate, or if they already have experience, they can take a test. Trent Boat Handling can give you the appropriate training (if you require it) as well as testing you for your ICC. Please note, however, that we are only able to test for Motor Craft ICCs.

RYA ICC Prerequisites

There are several options that are available in order to meet the practical requirements for your RYA International Certificate of Competence. These are the same whether your ICC is for either Inland or Coastal Certification:

A pass in a practical RYA certificated course in boat handling. Passing the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate (IWHC) we run would qualify.
Be the holder of a suitable non RYA course certificate in practical boat handling.
Alternatively your abilities may be assessed during a properly conducted assessment of your skills. Please contact us about this.

RYA ICC Requirements

Having gained a pass in a practical examination / assessment, you will also need to pass the CEVNI examination if you wish to navigate inland in many countries.

Getting Your RYA ICC

Once you have passed the practical and CEVNI requirements, you will then have to submit evidence of qualifications to the RYA in order to have your International Certificate of Competence issued.

RYA Fees

If you are an RYA member your ICC will be issued free of charge. If you are not an RYA member there is currently a fee of £38.00.

There is an option to fast track your application (in two days) for an additional fee of £10.

Our advice would be that you join the RYA, not only for the savings it brings you for your ICC, but also for the other services they provide to boat owners.

ICC Country Rules

Any country issuing ICCs can only do so to its own nationals or residents. The candidates must be at least 16 years old, be physically and mentally fit, and in particular must have sufficient powers of vision and hearing.
